ROBOpedia: Robotech II: The Sentinels Week Two

Week Two: Robotech Art Three by Carl Macek

As the assault on Invid controlled Fantoma begins, it's the Invid who are winning. The Inorganics possess a distinct advantage over Col. Wolfe's Hovertanks, and casualties are high.
However, the tides turns when Col. Wolfe quits worrying about Minmei, and finally calls for air support, and the Skull Squadron drives the Inorganics back, allowing the REF time to regroup.

After the initial battle with the Inorganics, our heroes take the time to lick there wounds.
Jack confronts Karen about her unwillingness to aid Dr. Grant with the wounded, Rick wants to return to the confy seat of a Veritech, Minmei worries about Col. Wolfe, Exedore and Dr. Lang attempt to work out the mystery of the Inorganics, and Rem and Cabell make contact with the REF notifying them that the Royal Hall seems to be the Invids base of operations.

As Vince Grant onboard the GMU notifies the SDF-3 of the call from the two Robotech Master Scientists, Jack and Karen decide to take matters into their own hands by arming themselves, confiscating two Hovercycles, and ride off to destroy Invid headquarters themselves, all while the Skull squadron is ordered to recon the Royal Hall.
Tesla informs the Regent of the current situation which sparks an arguement between the two Invid rulers, and ends with the Regiss leaving to pursue her own quest for the missing Protoculture Matrix and the Flower of Life.
Back on Fantoma, Jack and Karen rescue Rem and Cabell from the pair of Cougars attempting to force their way into their hiding place just after being rescued by the Skull Squadron.

After being brought up to the orbiting SDF-3, Rem and Cabell are debriefed by Dr. Lang where they are told of the fate of the SDF-1 and tell the REF that the Masters are on their way to Earth at that exact moment.
Unfortunately, the REF is unable to return to Earth due to damage done to the Fold System by the SDF-3 carrying to much weight during its initial Fold, and the only way to repair it lies in materiels found on Fantoma.
While the Invid Regent sends a division of Invid Shock Troopers to deal with the REF, Rick and Edwards both volunteer for the raid on the Royal Hall.

The battle for Fantoma begins as the reinforcements from Optera arrive in orbit, and the ground offensive begins.
The battle is fierce in orbit and on the surface, but concludes when the Col. Edwards and his Ghost Squadron make their way into the Royal Hall and deactivate the Invid Brain.
The Invid have been defeated on Tirol, but a new fleet of alien vessels is discovered to be heading towards Fantoma.

The Devils Hand by Jack McKinney
  • Differences from Art Three
  • Once Again, Events are in a different order
  • Karen willing to help the wounded in the GMU
  • GMU under attack from the Invid calls the SDF-3 for reinforcements, and Edwards ignores the request.
  • REF made up of the RDF, ASC, and a Plenipotentiary Council made up of Dr. Lang, Exedore, and politicians from Earth
  • The Plenipotentiary Council believes the SDF-3 should return to Earth, and leave a small group of Diplomats to negociate with the Invid.
  • As soon as Max notifies Rick of the GMU's request, Rick orders the Skull to provide Air Support
  • Exedore recognizes Cabell's voice and name from the Tiresian message as the Robotech Master scientist who created him.
  • As Skull is performing recon over the Royal Hall, Obsim activates a defensive shield over the Royal Hall in order to protect the brain
  • Obsim also orders out Inorganics to defend the Royal Hall.
  • Instead of setting out to destroy the Invid Brain, Jack and Karen simply "borrow" a couple of Hovercycles to rescue the Tirolian "rebels", Rem and Cabell
  • After being rescued, Cabell's first words to the Skull pilot, "Take Me To Your Leader".
  • After Dr. Lang sees Rem for the first time, he believes Cabell's assistant to be Zor, which Cabell dismisses.
  • Cabell recognizes Exedore during his and Rem's debriefing.
  • All of the REF command staff is well aware of the damage done to the SDF-3's fold engine by the Invid's counter attack
  • While Dr. Lang and Exedore show Cabell around the Fold System, Cabell regales them with Zor's history, and notifies them that all they need to repair the Fold System is the Monopole ore found on Fantoma.
  • Dr. Lang and Exedore plan to return the Zentraedi to full size for the mining of the ore
  • The Invid scientist, Tesla, makes a stop on Praxis, where the Regis is currently based, for supplies and a pair of Praxians for the Regent's Zoo.
  • The Regis has a Genesis Pit on Praxis
  • Tesla then plans to stop at Haydon IV for the final two specimens in the Regent's private zoo.
  • Haydon IV is controlled by the Invid, but still belongs to no one
  • Col. Wolff's "Wolff Pack" is ordered to deactivate the Invid brain in the Royal Hall, but Edwards has other plans.
  • Edwards' Ghost Squadron collapses a part of the Labyrinth in the Royal Hall on the Wolff Pack, so Edwards can capture the brain himself.
  • While Rick flies with the Skull against the Invid, he is injured.
  • Edwards makes it to the Brain first, makes a deal with the brain, then deactivates it, deactivating all the Invid in orbit and all the Inorganics on the ground, and promptly assassinates Obsim just before Col. Wolff arrives.
    • The aftermath of the Invid's defeat in Tirol Orbit
    • Cabell shows Dr. Lang around the Royal Hall, regales him with the History of the Robotech Masters, and warns him that the Invid are a worse threat to
    • Earth then the Robotech Masters.
    • Dr. Lang estimates that it will take around Five Years to mine the necessary ore and repair the Fold Engines of the SDF-3
    • Breetai agrees with Exedore that it is necessary for the Zentraedi to be returned to full size for Monopole Ore Mining.
    • Edwards begins to plan his conquest of Earth and the Local Group
    • The R.E.F. celebrates New Years on Tirol with the romance of Col. Wolff and Minmei, the romance of Janice and Rem, and the budding friendship of Jack and Karen, only to be interrupted by the SDF-3 detecting an unidentified alien vessel making its way towards Tirol.

Robotech II: The Sentinels Book One Issues 10 through 16 by Tom Mason and Chris Ulm
  • Once Again, Events are in a different order
  • And some dialoge has been changed
  • Plenipotentiary Council also in Comics
  • Lang notifies SDF-3 Command about Space Fold Damage
  • The Regent is notified of the Regiss's departure from Optera, and is really, really, miffed.
  • Rick Visits with Minmei in Sick Bay who is then visited by a bearded orderly, who then spies on Wolffe visiting the celebrity
  • The surface battle on Tirol follows the Novels, but is pretty short with no cut scenes of Edwards order to ignore the request for Air Support (just him ordering the ignoring of Cabell's message just before Rick enters)
  • No hospital scene of Jack and Karen helping the wounded.
  • But we do have Karen confronting Jack as he prepares to rescue the Tiresian "Rebels" by himself (Art 3 - Karen uses Martial Arts, Novels and comics - A Pistol)
  • No Jack hitting the Invid Shield, but they do get Cabell and Rem, and are then found by Skull One piloted by Max Sterling.
  • Before being whisked away to the SDF-3, Cabell gets a chance to meet Miriya Sterling
  • Vince Grant looks cartoony when sarcastically happy, and downright terrifiying when pissed off. Don't mess with that man
  • Oh, and it looks like Rick and Lisa will only get to know one night of wedded bliss.
  • And we get to see Dr. Lang's mind boost in Flashback
  • Skull Squadron Insignia: The Jolly Rogers. Ghost Squadron Insignia: Two words. SPAAAAACE GHOOOOOST!
  • The Skull battles the Invid reinforcements in space, with Rick in a Robotech War era VF series Veritech (and atmospheric helmet)
  • Don't have the issues where the REF detects the unidentified alien vessel, but the story does continue.
